HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Dhakuakhana College was established in 1965 by the people of Dhakuakhana with the aim rendering higher education to the poor students who cannot go outside for higher education due to financial hardship The Dhakuakhana is a flood affected area. It has no good means of communication. The place is also very backward. The most of the people depend on agriculture Agriculture production is very low to meet the demand of the growing population. But the eagerness of acquiring higher education among the common people is very high. As such, the people of Dhakuakhana started the college with only Arts stream with limited financial capacity In initial stage certain subjects of Arts stream were introduced in the college Among them the subject Economics is also introduced in pre-university level. But in 1974, the public and the students of the college stressed the need of opening 'Honours' class in the subject 'Economics following the growing need for higher education For the first time the response from the students for offering 'Honours in the subject was encouraging one and three students offered 'Honours in the subject Economics. The starting batch of the 'Honours students were 1 Hema Dutta 2 Pemeswar Saikia and 3 Girin Gogoi is a matter of pride and glory that the first batch who offered Honours in the subject Economics come out successful securing higher second class under Dibrugarh University From then onward the department of Economics of Dhakuakhana college with four lecturere 1 Mr. Biren Dutta, 2 Mr Bhulanath Sarmah, 3. Mrs Anima Dutta, 4, Dr. Girin Gogoi, in the department is trying with honest effort to render fruitful teaching to the students belonging to this department. Several students have come out successful by seeking Major and with 'core subjects in the degree level Out of these successful many students have completed post graduate study also. Even two students have acquired Ph.D. degree and they are now in gainful employment Dr. Kamala Dutta M.APh D is a lecturer of Uzani Majuli Kherkatia College and also the Principal of that college and Dr. Girin Gogol,M.A Ph. D. is a lecturer and also Principal of this College Besides most of the students have been carrying their bread through gainful employment in different department of the government. It also a matter of pride for the department that Mr. Suriya Chutia who secured first class major in this department in 1994. He qualified NET and now he is a lecturer of Tinsukia College. The department of Economics with its four learned lecturers have been rendering their best and honest effort in teaching the subjects with its limited scopes in the classrooms. Moreover lecturers are always rendering valuable advice and ready to give to the outgoing students if they feel need and necessity.
